Path of Exile item level upgrade Upgrades

Upgrades to items are a frequent and essential way to boost the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

Sometimes, however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade gear due to their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They boost the effectiveness of the item they are attached to. Upgrades to armor are available in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged using a specialist or higher salvage kit to retrieve upgrade components from items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it is able to absorb. The damage absorption of a piece armor will increase when it's upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. It's important to remember that this will increase the weight of the armor, therefore it must be heavier.

There are a variety of armor upgrades available in the game. Each one has a distinct impact. For example, some upgrades will grant the armor a certain amount of additional health points, while others will make it lighter and stronger. The name of the armor upgrade will tell you the kind of upgrade that an item will receive, as shown below.

Some upgrades are magic or a hybrid of magic and technology, which is shown by the "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges for use. You can still do this, however, the process is high on RNG and low on agency. You're better off buying gear that has low levels of upgrade and high base scores and stat distributions. These items have a better chance of giving you the highest tier advantages and benefits.

To level up faster, most players will prioritize upgrading their weapons. In addition, players should consider upgrading the weapons favored by their teammates to increase their power and effective. Jewels

Jewels are used in the sockets of armor and weapons, increasing the power of a character and bringing about secondary effects. They can be created using an process known as jewelry crafting, which is where you combine a gem and a number of specific chemicals at a table. The higher the level of the gem, the greater the secondary effect. These reagents are obtained in the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and occasionally by salvaging Legendary equipment. All levels of jewels can be made at the Jeweler, with the exception of the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a certain level to obtain the privilege of having them. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped with another jewel of the same kind without destroying the original one. However you can only swap out one jewel in a piece of equipment only once.

It is typical to use more jewels for aesthetic reasons. In addition to enhancing performance, the jewels create a surface that is harder than metal, so repeated friction from pivots doesn't cause damage as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the look of your shields and weapons. These glyphs give a slight boost and can be freely exchanged, however they are not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs, like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs can also be taken out and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components such as traits or aegis cannot be exchanged and can only be retrieved by using an Upgrade extractor or salvaging using a Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage.

Trinkets

Trinkets are pieces of equipment that provide a wide range of small, but beneficial advantages to your hero. They are available in the starting area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They can also be obtained through vendors and after completing road interaction. They can be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinket players can unlock is the cloak. It grants a small but beneficial boost in movement speed and evasion. The player will then be able to acquire rings, amulets and necklaces in a similar fashion as they did with weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has an upgrade slot that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be used in any type of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and only works with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't fighting. This allows the hero to be more effective when not active, and can also help to compensate for the absence of a strong team or the absence of any talent tree slots which would normally be filled with hero's ideal statistics.

In general trinket upgrades should be prioritized over BiS (Best in Slot) items that you will not replace in the near future.
